Our research

We study the molecular events accompanying stress, aging, and cancer. In particular, we focus on the RNA level of gene expression in these physiological conditions. Regulation at the RNA level includes multiple processes, such as transcription, mRNA processing, stability, translation, and others. We address multiple open questions within this scientific field. For example, how does stress impact the ability of our cells to express genes de novo? How does their coding potential change? Or, how does anti-cancer therapy change the gene expression program? And, one of the most interesting and important questions: what the cells do to survive cancer therapies? We believe that the ability to answer these and multiple other questions will substantially deepen our understanding of the different pathological conditions and, eventually, increase our well-being. Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge, which is power; religion gives man wisdom, which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals.

About us

We are a group of molecular biologists at different career stages. We are interested in deciphering the secrets of multiple aspects of gene regulation at the RNA level. We come from different backgrounds, both cultural and scientific. Although we typically speak English in the lab, many of us know at least one additional language, such as Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, or Hindi. Each one has her/his own project, and we often collaborate within the lab, helping each other.

Our methods

We study RNA regulation using versatile molecular, biochemical, and genomic methods. In the past, we addressed multiple questions in DNA transcription, protein synthesis, mRNA stability, polyadenylation, translation initiation, and RNA modifications. Experimentally, we mainly employ mammalian cell cultures (but also used the yeast S. cerevisiae in the past). Currently, we use versatile methods to engineer (clone) DNA, synthesize, detect, and transfect RNA, and study protein homeostasis. We employ multiple protocols and even establish and elaborate new ones. It is of great importance for us to employ cutting-edge methodologies!

The location

Our lab is a part of the Technion, a highly-ranked Israeli university leading the development of novel technologies in multiple research areas. It was established in 1912, which makes it the oldest university in Israel. A recent Shanghai academic ranking placed the Technion at position 79 worldwide. Technion has 19 academic departments, 60 research centres, and 12 affiliated teaching hospitals. Remarkably, three Technion scientists are Nobel Laureates – Professors Avram Hershko, Aaron Ciechanover and Dan Shechtman. Our lab is a part of the Faculty of Medicine located in the peaceful neighborhood of Bat-Galim, just near the Mediterranean coast. The location is wonderful: the closest beach is within a 10-minute walk, and a train station connecting Haifa to multiple locations can be reached within 5 minutes. This makes us readily reachable by public transportation from the northern Israeli towns and cities close to the central part of Israel, such as Hadera, Netanya and Tel Aviv.

The vibrant city of Haifa is home to ethnic diversities that include Jews, Muslims, Christians, Baha’is, Druze, Bedouins and others. Many languages are spoken in this tolerant city, and multiple sorts of traditional foods can be found all over. The multicultural heritage is an integral part of this peaceful city.
